How to buy garden tools you will still be using in twenty years
The differences that decide whether a digging tool lasts one season or a lifetime are all visible in the shop, and none of them are the brand on the sticker.
Garden tools fail in three places and only three: where the head meets the handle, somewhere along the handle, and at the working edge. Every question worth asking in a shop is about one of those three.
None of it requires knowing which factory made what. You can check all of it standing in an aisle in about ninety seconds, and it applies just as well to a secondhand spade at a yard sale, which is frequently the better buy anyway.
Start at the joint
On a spade or a digging fork, the connection between the metal and the wood takes every bit of leverage you generate, and there are three common ways of making it. A solid socket is formed as part of the head, wrapping right around the base of the handle like a deep cup. A strapped head has metal straps running up either side of the handle, riveted through. A tang and ferrule is a spike driven up into the end of the handle with a metal collar around the outside to stop it splitting.
The first two last decades. The third is where cheap tools break, and they break in a specific and predictable way: the handle splits lengthwise at the point where the tang ends, usually the first time somebody levers a root out with it. If you can only check one thing on a digging tool, look at how far up the handle the metal goes and whether it wraps or merely pokes.
Forged, or folded out of sheet
Run a thumb along the back of the blade from the socket to the cutting edge. A forged head is hammered out of a thicker piece of steel and comes out noticeably heavier at the shoulder, tapering toward the edge, because that is where the stress lives. A pressed head is cut and bent from flat sheet of uniform thickness, so it is the same gauge at the shoulder as at the tip. Pressed blades flex under load, and a blade that flexes is one that will eventually take a permanent bend or crack at the fold line.
The handle is what you are really buying
Ash and hickory are traditional for good reasons: both are strong along the grain and absorb shock rather than transmitting it into your wrists. What matters is not the species so much as the grain direction. You want the growth lines running straight down the length of the handle and off the ends, not sweeping out through the side halfway along, which is a break waiting for a cold morning. Look at the end grain too. Straight, parallel, roughly even lines are what you want. A thickly painted or heavily varnished handle hides all of this, and hiding it is usually the point.
Length is the other half. A digging tool whose handle top lands somewhere around your hip lets you work upright and use your legs. Too short and you stoop all afternoon, which is how backs go. Tubular steel and fiberglass handles are genuinely strong and immune to rot, but they pass more shock into your hands, they cannot be shaved down to fit you, and when they do go they tend to go all at once rather than showing you a crack first. A wooden handle is also replaceable, which over thirty years is the whole argument.
Stainless or carbon steel
This one is a genuine trade-off rather than a quality question. Stainless resists rust and has a slicker surface, so it sheds heavy clay and slides into the ground with less effort, which is a real pleasure on wet soil. It is also typically softer, so the edge dulls sooner and is harder to bring back. Carbon steel takes a keener edge, holds it longer, and comes back in two minutes with a file, but it will rust the week you leave it out. Buy stainless if you know you will not clean your tools, and carbon if you know you will.
Pruners get one extra test
Bypass pruners have two curved blades that pass each other like scissors and cut cleanly through living wood. Anvil pruners close a single blade onto a flat plate, which crushes the stem on one side before it severs it. On dry deadwood that is fine and the extra force is welcome. On live stems it leaves a bruised wound that dies back, so if you own one pair, it should be bypass.
Then look at whether they come apart. A pruner held together with a proper bolt, with replacement blades and springs sold separately, can be cleaned, sharpened and rebuilt indefinitely. A riveted pair cannot be taken down, cannot be sharpened properly, and is finished the day the spring pings off into the grass. Check for the spare parts before you buy, not after.

Keeping them
Soil left on steel holds moisture against it, so the single most valuable habit is scraping tools clean and drying them before they go away. A rag with a little oil on it, kept in a jar by the door, takes five seconds a tool. Sharpen your digging tools as well as your cutting ones. A spade is meant to have an edge, and a few strokes of a mill file along the existing bevel, pushing in one direction only, halves the effort of cutting through turf. Store everything hanging rather than standing in a bucket where the ends sit in whatever collects at the bottom.
Wooden handles want an occasional wipe of boiled linseed oil, once a year is plenty, worked in and any excess wiped off. One genuine warning goes with that: rags soaked in linseed oil generate heat as the oil cures, and a crumpled pile of them can reach the point of catching fire on its own. Spread them out flat to dry, or drop them in a can of water. It is an odd note to end a tool article on, and it is the one piece of this that can actually hurt you.
