Why the flight that looks like ninety minutes is nothing of the sort
The comparison most people make is flight time against train time, which is the wrong comparison entirely. Here is how to work out which one really gets you there sooner.
A search page shows you a ninety-minute flight and a five-hour train and the decision looks made. It isn't, because those two numbers are measuring different things. One of them is the time an aircraft spends in the air. The other is very nearly the whole journey.
The honest comparison is door to door: from your front door to wherever you are actually going. Do that arithmetic once, properly, and a lot of routes flip. Do it a second time including what the two options cost you in usable hours rather than elapsed ones, and a few more flip after that.
Building the real number
Write two columns and fill in every stage. Not estimates you'd like to be true — the times you would actually give yourself if you had to make the trip tomorrow and could not miss it.
- Getting to the terminal. Airports sit outside cities and main rail stations usually sit in the middle of them. This single line is frequently worth an hour and it appears twice, once at each end.
- The buffer you would actually leave. Whatever the airline says, put down the time you would really aim to arrive, including the margin for the transfer being late. For a train it is generally the ten minutes it takes to find the platform.
- Security and boarding. Some days it is nothing. Plan for the version that isn't.
- The moving part. Gate-to-gate time rather than the airborne figure, because taxiing out and taxiing in are real minutes, and the scheduled train time is already end to end.
- Getting off and out. Deplaning a full aircraft, then waiting at the belt if you checked a bag, then immigration if it applies. Off a train you are on the street in five minutes.
- Getting from the terminal to where you're going. Again, usually longer from an airport, and usually more expensive.
In our experience the crossover lands somewhere around four or five hours of rail time, and it moves substantially depending on how central the stations are at both ends. That last part is worth checking specifically. Some high-speed stations were built well outside the towns they are named after, and a route with an out-of-town station at each end can give back everything the train had gained.
The number that matters more than the average
Compare the spread, not just the middle. When a train runs twenty minutes late, you arrive twenty minutes late. The failure is proportional to the problem. Air travel is not built that way: most flights are fine, and the ones that aren't can cost you a night, because a cancellation puts you in line for seats that mostly do not exist until tomorrow.
So the right question is not which option is faster on a good day. It is what the bad day looks like on each, and how much you care. Flying to a wedding on Saturday for a Saturday afternoon ceremony is a different risk from flying home on a Sunday when Monday is flexible. Where the bad outcome is expensive, the mode with the gentler failure is worth real money.
Hours you can use versus hours you can only spend
Five hours on a train is not five hours lost. There is a table, a plug, a window, usually a signal, and the freedom to get up and walk to the café car whenever you want. People work, read whole books, have long conversations, and eat a meal that is not on a tray.
Ninety minutes in the air comes wrapped in three hours you cannot do anything with. Security lines, gate lounges, a taxi with a bag on your lap. Some of it is technically workable and almost none of it is actually worked. If you count the two journeys in hours you got to keep rather than hours that elapsed, the train's margin widens well before the door-to-door totals meet.
The rest of the ledger
- Luggage. On most trains you carry what you can carry, with no weigh-in, no check-in and no possibility of the bag going somewhere else. For anyone traveling with a lot of gear, or with a child and a stroller, this alone can decide it.
- The headline fare is not the fare. Add checked bags, seat selection and the transfers at both ends before comparing. Those extras land almost entirely on the flying side.
- Booking behavior differs. On many rail networks the cheap fares are released well ahead and climb steadily toward departure, so a last-minute train can be startlingly expensive — and unlike an airline, the flexible ticket is often a genuinely useful product.
- Emissions. Per passenger on the same route, rail is generally much the lower-impact option. If that factors into your decisions at all, it factors here rather than anywhere else in trip planning.
- Rail connections are not automatically protected across a change of operator or country the way a through-ticketed flight is. If your journey involves a change, check whose ticket you are holding before you build a tight one.
The night train question
A sleeper changes the math in a way the daytime comparison misses, because it consumes a night you were going to spend somewhere anyway. You board at ten, you arrive at seven, and the journey has cost you no daylight at all — plus one hotel night you did not book.
It is not free, though, and the cost is sleep quality. A berth is narrower and noisier than a bed, and the arrival is early whether or not you are ready for it. Our rule is that a sleeper is excellent when the following day is loose and a poor idea when the following morning matters. Anyone who does not sleep well in unfamiliar places should treat it as a travel experience rather than a time-saving one.
Where flying still clearly wins
Over water, over long distances, and anywhere the rail route means three changes and a bus replacement, the aircraft is not just faster but obviously so. The same goes for routes where the only rail option would take a full working day but has no sleeper on it — that is a day of your trip spent staring at a seat back, and no amount of principle makes it a good trade.
The routes worth re-examining are the medium ones, the two-hour flights between neighboring regions that everybody flies out of habit. Run the columns on one of those before you book it next time. Half the time the numbers say what you expected, and the other half you get a table, a plug and your afternoon back.
